Our orthodontist in Liverpool putting smiles on faces

Our mouths are more than just the gateway to digesting our food, they are also a vital mechanism in the way that we express emotion. A smile, a grimace, a sneer are just some of the ways in which we express ourselves. The latest technology has meant that we are able to take pictures of ourselves and send them around the world to our friends and family. As an orthodontist Liverpool we want to help patients to correct their misaligned teeth. This will allow them to feel confident enough to beam their image to others without fear of judgement over the condition of their teeth.

We are not all born equal

It is an unfortunate fact of life that we are not all born equal and as a consequence from a dental perspective that means that some of us have misaligned teeth. As an orthodontist Liverpool we are trained to identify and diagnose conditions of this nature. We are also trained to prevent and treat these irregularities.

Getting in early

The first line of defence is prevention and the best way to prevent problems later is by early diagnosis. We encourage parents to bring their children into our surgery from as young as one year old. This allows them to become familiar and comfortable in our surgery’s environment and also allows us to do an oral examination, thereby enabling us to identify any problems that may manifest later. We also recommend that from around the age of seven, children should start to have regular six-monthly dental appointments. We can then focus on any problems that may be starting to develop as their second teeth start to appear. This is also a good time to educate them on the correct brushing and flossing techniques. The correct toothbrush is also essential, especially at this young age, and using a brush that is too hard can cause problems. We will therefore guide them on the selection of the right toothbrush for their needs at this time.

Improved dental appliances

Dental science and technology have been hard at work developing more effective solutions to many conditions. Misaligned teeth have been a major focus of the industry for decades and some amazing devices have been created. Many years ago there was really only one effective device used to straighten teeth and that was a metal brace. This same brace has been improved to such an extent that anyone who wore one twenty years ago would find it unrecognisable now.

More specific treatments

There is no longer just one type of appliance to treat all cases of dental misalignment, as we now have a variety of devices to correct different conditions. Improved traditional metal braces are still used and are more effective and comfortable these days. They can have different colour bands to add variety to their appearance. In addition ceramic braces work in the same manner as traditional braces, but they blend in with your natural tooth colour. Lingual braces are similar to other fixed braces, but fit onto the inside of your teeth which makes them less conspicuous. The latest innovation is an aligner which works differently to a traditional brace. This method makes use of a series of ‘trays’ which fit over your teeth like a gum shield, they gradually ease your teeth into the desired position. Each tray is orientated slightly differently and only requires a quick visit to the dentist about every three to four weeks to check that treatment is progressing correctly.
